Speiliks make handmade, handpainted wooden toys on a small croft in Burra, an island off the west side of the Shetland Mainland. The company name, "Speiliks", means wood shavings in the Shetland dialect.
Of the nine toys available, three reflect life in Shetland. One of the earliest designs and still the most popular is the Shetland Inter-Island Ferry. It is on wheels, has fully operational bow and stern doors and comes with a pair of ramps to ensure that on and off-loading run smoothly.
The Britten-Norman "Islander", Shetland's ten seater Inter-Island Aeroplane and Air Ambulance, is built to scale with several alterations to make it a more robust toy. Two local nurses were presented with model "Islanders" after completing more than one hundred Air Ambulance flights.
The most recent toy on the list is Shetland's HM Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter, "Oscar Charlie". Speiliks has now had two commissions from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency Headquarters in Southampton to supply the toy Sikorsky S61N Helicopters. They are awarded to children who have initiated a rescue involving the Coastguard.
Other toys available from Speiliks are a Bi-plane in two sizes, a tractor and trailer in two sizes, a small lorry and a small chunky car.
