I bind my books with Shetland textiles made from 100% Shetland wool produced at Jamiesons Spinning Mill in Sandness. Bindings of Fair Isle knitwear, tweed and hand made felt make practical and tactile bindings, celebrating the indigenous crafts and industries of a unique tradition and heritage.

Most of the books I make have Medieval bindings based on how books were bound in medieval times. In bindings of Leather, Handmade 100% Shetland Felt and various Fish skins. The sewing can be seen from the outside on the spine and although they are made using no glue, they still remain as robust as a modern day book.

I enjoy making books with old sea chart covers and land maps. Sea charts are especially good as they have an historic dimension, having been used on various ships and boats. They are also made of a very high quality material which makes a robust cover and reflects well on the finished product.
