Burra Bears are collectors' items, handmade from recycled traditional Fair Isle knitwear and stuffed using the scraps.
Each bear is personalised with it's own name. In the Shetland tradition their names take the form of a Christian and a place name such as Bertie 'o' Brough. There is also a reply card so that new owners can say where the bears have gone to live.
It takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to create the 10 inch high bear, and each develops its own character.
Outlets in Lerwick are The Spiders Web, Visit Shetland, The Hansel and Ninian. Bears are also available from the Quendale Mill in Dunrossness.
Other outlets are Sheila Fleet Gallery in Orkney, Just Scottish in Edinburgh and Touched by Scotland in Aberdeenshire. Bears are also available on Northlink Ferries travelling between Shetland and Aberdeen.
